One can easily feel overwhelmed by zillions of things to do and yet not know where to begin with, in a city such as New York. However, even with limited time and budget, the city offers itself to be exploited for the travellers to get a sense of belongingness.
1. Live the city
If you have the chance, a must is to rent a place online from Airbnb. It may be the most authentic way to live like a New Yorker. With listings available across the five boroughs, you’re bound to find a friendly owner. Explore the neighbourhood around you, shop at the corner grocery store, find your way to the nearest subway and find yourself being a part of the city hustle. Brooklyn with its unique architecture and charming neighbourhoods gives a cozy feel with the excitement and options of big city life.
2. Flow with the city
If you didn’t already know, New York City has three rivers surrounding it – the Hudson, the East River and the Harlem River- the latter two are in fact tidal straits; all flowing into the Atlantic ocean. It’s conventional to want to see the 789 or so bridges in the city. However, a walk down the river side parks is refreshing. A good place to begin may be the beautiful Hudson River Park which is between Battery to 72nd Street. If you start at the Battery Place, see if you can spot the statue of Liberty in the horizon!
3. Follow the music
The culturally vibrant as New York City is, the music scene as many will tell you is magical. But not all can afford to hit the numerous Broadway shows, concerts and live-music restaurants; not on a regular bases anyway. A quaint way to enjoy the notes is the subway stations everywhere. Young and old, men and women, delight you with their musical talents. Just the list of music genres is insane- folk, country, blues, jazz, hip-hop; you name it. Many may see it as begging, but if their music doesn’t move you, then it is up for debate.
4. Devour the city
Whether you’re on a tight budget or if you want to spend generously; you’ll always be satisfied with the culinary experience in New York. Even one deli, on any corner, can support your visit, without you having to eat the same thing twice. Vegetarians beware, you may have lesser options, but not at all limited. Sugarholics beware; the unbelievable options of the addictive drinks can throw you overboard. If you’re feeling especially extravagant, several food tours such as the food walk in Greenwich Village may be the most delicious, with the Neapolitan pizzas and different kinds of cheese in the charming neighbourhood restaurants.
5. Walk the city
An evening walk through the hustle of Manhattan may be the most mesmerising and fulfilling thing you do in the New York City. Begin at West 42nd Street and 8th Avenue, near Port Authority Bus Station and walk east. You will cross- Madame Tussards, The New York Victory Theatre, Bryant Park, The New York Public Library, The Grand Central Station, The Chrysler building among others, till you reach the East River. Standing there on 1st Avenue, the United Nations Headquarters will greet you with all its grandeur – the rest are for you to discover!
