A new record was set when 6,117 Kuchipudi dancers from across India and other nations came together at an event to present a mega dance performance which made its way to the Guinness.

India’s varied colours are strewn across its length and breadth with each state having a unique culture composed of different traditions, cuisines, beliefs and art forms. Kuchipudi, a classical dance form from the south-eastern Indian state, Andhra Pradesh is one of the most celebrated and popular dance forms in India.

Recently, it made it to the Guinness book of world records when a record 6,117 dancers came together to present a show at the IGMC Stadium in the city of Vijaywada. Incidentally, Kuchipudi is the name of a district 35 km from Vijaywada.

The performance saw participation by performers from countries like the US, the UK, the UAE, Russia, Hong Kong and Mauritius, and lasted 13 minutes. The Guinness requirement is a minimum of five minutes to attempt an entry into the records.

A grand group dance called the Maha Brunda Natyam was organised as part of the ‘5th International Kuchipudi Dance Convention’ by the state Department of Language and Culture. The group presented the ‘Jayamu Jayamu’, a rich example of Kuchipudi dance item choreographed by legendary Vempati China Satyam. Declared as a winner by Guinness adjudicator Rishinath, the certificate was presented to Andhra Pradesh’s chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
