Ranbir Kapoor last movie with Deepika Padukone, ‘Tamasha’

Ranbir Kapoor, the fourth generation actor of the renowned ‘Kapoor family’ of the Hindi cinema who is a favourite amongst female audiences of the country is perhaps no longer a favourite of the box office numbers. That is yet again proven by the results of his latest release ‘Tamasha’ (November 27, 2015), a romantic drama, major part of which has been shot in exotic locations of Corsica in France.

Bets were placed high on this youthful story where the 33-year old is paired opposite his ex-flame Deepika Padukone. Not that the movie was a complete failure but yes it did not foray into what can be called a super-hit as was expected. A few months prior to the release of ‘Tamasha’, film industry and the common public alike were highly anticipating the release of ‘Bombay Velvet’, a crime drama, set in the post independence Bombay. Everyone hoped that the movie that features the Kapoor lad as a street boxer, who falls in love with a cabaret dancer, will finally turn the tables for the actor. However, destiny had some other plans and the movie failed to find resonance with public. In fact for the director of the film, Anurag Kashyap, who has to his credits internationally acclaimed films such as ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, this movie was, for him, the biggest loss making movie in the history of cinema.

Moreover, Ranbir Kapoor didn’t open the box office for a span of nearly two years before making a re-entry in 2015. Whereas he once carved a niche for himself with Hindi films such as ‘Rockstar’ (2011) that saw him portraying a role of an average youngster who goes on to become an international singing icon drooling agony and violence. Another milestone in his now daunting career was ‘Barfi’ (2012) where he played a hearing and speech impaired boy. However, a gap of two years and then three consecutive failures in the year 2015 have left the actor way behind then his contemporaries – who are giving back to back hit movies every year.

Does that mean that Bollywood is finally making way for new comers who don’t belong to any of the prominent cinema families or so to say have no godfathers and are making it big on their own, not to mention the names of Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Sidharth Malhotra to name a few. Nevertheless, the finesse of Ranbir Kapoor is unquestionable that yet again leaves the Indian audiences anticipate his upcoming releases – ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and ‘Jagga Jasoos’, both to see the light of the day in 2016.
