Defence Industry in India

India has one of the fastest-growing global defence markets and is expected to spend approximately Dollar 304.7 billion during the forecast period.

The Indian defence industry is one of the fastest-growing global defence markets. India's defence capital expenditure is a part of the defence budget that is spent on the acquisition of all types of military hardware and technology. The strong growth in the industry is attracting foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and leading companies from the domestic private sector to enter the market. Moreover, terrorism is leading to sharp increases in the defence budget and a shorter sales cycle, which offers an attractive market for defence manufacturers. India is one the world's largest importers of military hardware with an estimated import spending of over Dollar 9 billion in 2009–2010. The country relies on imports to meet 70 pc of its defence requirements, with the remaining 40 pc met through domestic companies of which the public sector fulfills 21 pc and the private sector fulfills 9 pc of the defence procurement requirements.

Key highlight

  • Third largest armed forces in the world.
  • 31.5 pc of budget spent on capital acquisitions.
  • 70 pc of requirements met by imports.
  • INR 250 Billion to be invested in 7-8 years.

Investment Opportunity in India

India’s current requirements on defence are catered largely by imports. The opening of the strategic defence sector for private sector participation will help foreign original equipment manufacturers to enter into strategic partnerships with Indian companies and leverage the domestic markets and also aim at global business. Besides helping build domestic capabilities, this will bolster exports in the long term.

Opportunities to avail defence offset obligations to the tune of approximately INR 250 Billion during the next 7-8 years.

The offset policy (which stipulates the mandatory offset requirement of a minimum 30 pc for procurement of defence equipment in excess of INR 3 Billion) introduced in the capital purchase agreements with foreign defence players would ensure that an eco-system of suppliers is built domestically.

The government policy of promoting self-reliance, indigenisation, technology upgradation and achieving economies of scale and developing capabilities for exports in the defence sector.

The country’s extensive modernisation plans, an increased focus on homeland security and India’s growing attractiveness as a defence sourcing hub.

High government allocation for defence expenditure.

Skill development in aero & defence sector of India

The aero & defence sector would need at least 100,000 fresh skilled talents every year. Manufacturing, maintenance, repair, overhaul, operations and research and development are the areas where India needs fresh talent for aerospace sector. The defence sector also would need fresh and skilled talent. India is set to import aerospace and defence products worth Dollar 100 billion in next 10 years, which in turn would provide a Dollar 30 billion offset opportunity for India.

But on other hand there is a huge mismatch between the current education and the skill sets or in aero and defence industry, we don’t have any sufficient experience. Government, industries and academics have realized that the gap in the supply of employable manpower cannot be bridged without their close cooperation and continued engagement.

Keeping in mind the large requirements of Indian aero and defence industry of India, MIG with European Indian Foundation for Excellence has organised the 'Skill Development Session – Aero and Defence Industry' in India. The objective of this session is to build a platform between various government, private sector, Indian institutes, European institutes and civil society players to rapidly build up a vibrant skill development partnership with international countries, companies and institutes, which have satisfactory experience in this filed.
