Every year, the summer season plays havoc on our skin. Blistering heat, pollution and humidity wipes off the natural glow, and sometimes, breeds infections. Here are some Indian home remedies you can follow this season, which are as easy as ABC, yet effective.

Natural remedies are the best way to remove sunburn and skin tan as chemical treatments may have long term effects on your skin. Here are some easy DIY remedies, which can effortlessly improve your skin tone and protect it against the harmful rays of the sun, without you having to leave your home and with ingredients that are readily available in your kitchen.

To keep the skin cool

Sandalwood is used in Ayurveda to improve skin texture and make it glow. However, it is also beneficial for treating burning sensations on the skin and protect it from rashes/acne. Just mix 10 gramme of dried Multani mitti (Fuller’s earth), rose petals and peppermint leaves with rose water and apply to the skin. Leave for 30 minutes and take a bath with warm water.

Another way to keep the skin cool and treat dry skin is to take one teaspoon of Chironji seeds (Cuddapah almond) and soak them in milk overnight. In the morning, make a paste with same milk and apply on your face for 30 minutes. Wash with warm water.

De-tan herbally

Lemon is widely used in various skin and hair care remedies as well as skin care products. It is a natural bleaching agent and an antioxidant that is rich in vitamin C. Mix lemon juice and mashed Aloe Vera leaves and apply on the tanned areas of the skin. Wash, once dry. Apply this 2-3 times a week for a glowing skin and to cleanse pollution and dust off the pores. This can prove to be the most effective DIY remedy to remove tan.

Exfoliate naturally this summer season

Not many people know that curd is a great exfoliator that removes dead skin cells and also moisturises the skin deeply, while helping it stay cool from within, even under the scorching heat. On the other hand, gram flour de-tans the skin and provides an instant glow. Mix curd and gram flour in equal quantities and add lemon juice. Apply the paste on face, neck, hands and feet and wash with warm water after it dries. Apply twice a week for soft glowing skin.

Moisturise the skin with turmeric, yogurt and honey

Turmeric is a natural agent for effective tan removal and also treats dry skin in summers. Just make a thick paste by mixing turmeric with yogurt and honey and apply the paste on dry areas of the skin for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

Tulsi for blemishes, acne and scars

For a blemish free skin, mix one egg white with the paste of tulsi (holy basil) leaves and gently scrub particularly on the infected areas of the skin. Wash off after 20 minutes. The egg white will tighten pores while the tulsi paste will disinfect the skin and prevent infections thus preventing pimples and acne. This also helps in removing toxins, lightens scars and adds glow to the face.

However, these remedial pastes must never be applied on an unclean face to avoid dirt settling into the skin with the face mask. Now DIY-away!
