The World Tourism Forum achieved a first by announcing the top 100 companies in the global travel & tourism industry at a press conference before the ‘World Tourism Forum Global Meeting’, which will take place at Istanbul Congress Centre (ICC) on February 16-18.

Bulut Bağcı, the World Tourism Forum’s Chairman of the Board, and Erdem Tolon, Nielsen Media’s General Manager-Watch Market Leader, Marketing Effectiveness, met with national and international media representatives during the press conference held at Wyndham Grand Istanbul. Bağcı and Tolon shared the much anticipated revenue-based ‘Tourism 100’ report with the press members in the event.

Creating a USD 75 million momentum

Nielsen’s report on the top global 100 tourism companies focused on revenues. The document evaluated enterprises such as airline companies, online and offline travel agencies, and global hotels and hotel chains.

Bağcı, on the occasion, remarked, “Announcement of the leading tourism companies with such a serious analysis will be a decisive factor for our 2017 vision. In this sense, we are aware of the World Tourism Forum Global Meeting’s contribution to the industry as a platform that grows and develops on a year-to-year basis. It is pleasing for all of us to see that the Turkish Airlines, as a pride of Turkey, ranks as one of the top companies.”

Bağcı stated that the World Tourism Forum provided Turkey with a USD 75 million economic momentum emphasising that they would host tourism and culture ministers of 20 countries at the Global Meeting, which will take place at the Istanbul Congress Centre on February 16-18. The Global Meeting will feature world-renowned speakers and bring social media phenomenons together in Turkey. Bağcı said that they intend to contribute to the country’s promotion and hailed the influence of social media in this gathering.

Tolon, expressing opinions on the research, said, “As Nielsen Group, we identified the largest companies in the tourism industry, both in terms of revenues and advertising investments, with the research we conducted on behalf of the World Tourism Forum. Turkey ranks 6th in tourism advertisements survey while the United States ranks first. We conducted a revenue-based analysis of the publicly-listed businesses such as accommodation, agency and airline companies, and we had a closer look at the tourism industry which sees strong global competition identifying the biggest companies based on turnover. Our revenue-based research helped us identify the world’s highest-earning 100 companies in the tourism industry, which we call ‘T100’, and shed light on the biggest ones.”

The report reviewed tourism advertising expenditures in Turkey, Europe and the Americas, and reached detailed information about the highest-spending 10 countries, as well as time frames and deployed channels. “We are excited and happy to share in the World Tourism Forum a harmonised mix of advertisement investments of 9,125 companies from the hospitality industry and 1,367 advertising brands from the air transportation industry in 10 countries,” Tolon added.

The world-renowned names to be hosted in the Global Meeting at the Istanbul Congress Centre include Zuckerberg Media founder Randi Zuckerberg; David Miliband, former Foreign Secretary and the President and CEO of International Rescue Committee (IRC); Jack Straw, Home and Foreign Secretary under Tony Blair’s Prime Ministry; Thomas Anderson, CEO of Visit Stockholm, Sweden’s largest tourism promotion office; Dr Michael Frenzel, former UNWTO Special Ambassador and former Chairman World Travel & Tourism Council, and Zach King, who attracts considerable attention around the world with his illusions and his fantastic content creation.
