Development of skill is one of the ideal strategies to increase the efficacy and quality of labour for improved productivity and ensuring sustainability for an organisation. Skill development is a powerful tool to empower individuals and improve their social acceptance.
In view of the importance of skilled human resources for the growth of the organisation, the officials from various airports across the country are being trained regularly in various training institutes established by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), to enhance their skills in order to keep abreast with the latest technology and international aviation standards. The development of skill also brings job satisfaction and a sense of pride in the officials, which will benefit the organisation in the long term. Skill development is aimed at not only developing the skill set of the human resources, but, also at adding value to the organisation. In alignment with the international standardisation of competence development, AAI has entered into a joint venture with Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and has formed a new autonomous body, National Institute of Aviation Management and Research (NIAMAR Society) for augmenting the training activities in the civil aviation sector and, also, to impart knowledge to other stakeholders. Indian Aviation Academy (IAA) has been established under this society, aiming to develop itself as centre of excellence in the area of education, training and research in aviation, in the Asia Pacific region.
As a vibrant and growth-oriented organisation, AAI, over a period of time, has developed the skill of its employees in development, operation and management of ground infrastructure of airports, master planning of airports, designing, evaluation and construction of air passenger terminals and cargo terminals.
Numerous Initiatives
The officials of AAI are also well versed with airport development services relating to extension and development of existing airports/airstrips, preparation of techno economic feasibility study reports, terms of reference and detailed project reports. The skill of the AAI officials can also be enumerated in planning, installation, operation and maintenance of radars, navigational aids, visual and non-visual landing aids.
As a step ahead in the world of automation, AAI has skilled employees engaged in Automatic Self Briefing system, Air Traffic Management, Airlines Billing and Automatic Message Switching System. AAI also takes pride in enhancing the expertise of its personnel in Air Navigation Services, Flight Inspection Unit, Flight Calibration of Airport Ground Facilities and Airport Management on turnkey basis.
As a part of capacity building initiatives, AAI, in coordination with International Air Transport Association (IATA), conceptualised and developed an e-learning module on airport operations, thereby imparting training to 2,500 officials to enhance the quality of the manpower in AAI.
A MoU was also signed by AAI with Aviation Strategies International (ASI), who are the designated programme administrators for the global Airport Council International (ACI) – International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Airport Management Professional Accreditation Programme (AMPAP) and also an accredited member of the ICAO TRAINAIR PLUS network – for capacity building, such as training of AAI academics and professionals, especially, in the areas of training and learning methodologies, research and policy analysis, research collaboration on emerging aviation themes, development of innovative learning platforms and education programmes with emphasis on e-learning and technical assistance in the form of facilitating opportunities for strengthening AAI capacity in terms of providing learning services.
In the Fire Service Centres at Delhi & Kolkata, officials from across the country are provided comprehensive training in rescue and fire fighting services by imparting emergency response training to update their professional skill and knowledge. Additionally, two Pilot Training Centres are operated at Rae Bareilly and Gondia.

Global Outreach
The expertise of AAI is also being shared with the global aviation fraternity by offering training in the training centres established by AAI. Indian Aviation Academy, New Delhi, recently held training under ICAO-INDIA fellowship training programme for developing countries. Knowledge was shared on Airport Non Aeronautical Revenue, benefitting officials from various countries like Syria, Thailand, Philippines, Uganda, Niger, Mali, Maldives, Bhutan and Lebanon. Also, Civil Aviation Training Centre, Allahabad, held training for civil aviation officials from abroad, in the field of ATM and CNS maintenance & operations as per ICAO standards.
As a way forward, AAI has the privilege of deputing its highly skilled specialists in the field of Air Traffic Management and Air Navigation Services to Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Nepal and Vietnam. With an objective of achieving optimum utilisation of the highly skilled human resources available, AAI has also ventured into international arena by undertaking airport consultancy and construction projects in Algeria, Tanzania, Libya and Yemen, to name a few.
