64 years after Frida Kahlo’s death her designs are in the market
Unique interiors and house decors are something that everyone wants. There are so many ways to create exceptional interior designs. Lately, many decors and designs, including Indian are getting inspired by the works of Frida Kahlo.
Born in 1907, Frida Kahlo, wife of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, was a surreal painter who mostly made portraits expressing her life and pain. She was one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. As a child, Frida suffered from polio and also had a near death experience in a bus accident as a teenager. In spite of having 34 operations and several broken bones and ribs, Frida was extremely passionate about her work. Her expressions through her work were bold. Frida died at a young age of 47.
Indian interior markets taking inspiration from Frida Kahlo’s work
Designs inspired by her work have lately hit the Indian interior markets and the designs are splendid. Kahlo inspired themes are bold, beautiful, extensive and unique. Blue walls, big bold floral prints, outlandish colour combinations, and bright-coloured furniture is what makes it interesting. When it comes to décor and art, there are no rules. It’s a reflection of one’s personality and choice. Since her works are a representation of her life and experiences, it has a bold touch. There is use of vibrant and bold colours like bright yellow, red and use of contrasts to bring in the Mexican flavour.

Her artwork was aesthetic. And, the interiors have an eclectic mix of designs in order to decorate the houses. The interiors inspired by her designs usually have tonnes of artsy designs, flowers and succulents, and the use of a lot of bright colours.
Her designs are hitting the markets again, 64 years after her death. But, it is not the first time that her designs have inspired people. In the year 2016, there was an artwork gallery held in London called “Lust for life” where about 40 international artists merged their creativity along with the works of Frida Kahlo reflecting love, betrayal, lust, illness, fashion, family and colours.
Recognition of Frida Kahlo throughout the world
Frida Kahlo has inspired tonnes of women all over the world. On International Women’s Day, March 8, 2017 Frida Kahlo received her own Snapchat filter in honour of the day, which let the users to get an image of the overgrown eyebrows and the trademark braided tresses of Frida Kahlo.
“In the age of the selfie, Frida is considered to be the first selfie artist,” said Beatriz Alvarado from the Frida Kahlo Cooperation to CNET. “She told a story, love, life, strength and passion through her self-portraits.”
Google selected Kahlo as one of 13 historic women featured in its inspired Google doodle. The illustration by Jennifer Hom was originally featured on the search engine homepage on July 6, 2010 which would have been her 103rd birthday.
During her lifetime, she made about 140 paintings, out of which about five were self portraits that were a symbolic representation of physical and psychological wounds. Her paintings were biographical, falling under the category of Mexican muralism and revolutionary art. Her paintings were focused on Mexican folk culture and colours, due to which, she is a celebrated painter in Mexico. She also represented Catholic and Jewish culture through her works. Kahlo’s home, La Casa Azul, is now a museum but many of her designs are still intact.
She had once said, “I paint myself because I am often alone and I am the subject I know best.”
