Sidelines of SIAL Paris 2026
Foreground & Opportunity
The Indian wine market is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by rising disposable incomes, changing lifestyles, and an increasing preference for premium beverages among urban consumers. This steady rise in domestic consumption, coupled with the rapid expansion of the hospitality sector and the emergence of wine tourism, has positioned India as one of the most promising emerging markets globally. Backed by active government support for viticulture and local industry development, these shifting market dynamics present substantial opportunities for international, and particularly European, wine producers seeking to establish a foothold in a rapidly expanding consumer base.
On the other hand, Europe stands as the historic heartland and global leader of the wine industry, boasting centuries-old traditions, unmatched quality standards, and iconic wine-producing regions. While European labels enjoy high prestige worldwide, there is also a growing appreciation and presence of quality Indian wines in European markets, creating a fertile ground for bilateral exchange. Beyond direct product trade, this relationship offers immense potential for deep collaboration between the two regions, enabling partnerships in winemaking technology, vineyard investments, imports-exports, and culinary tourism, thereby enriching the wine ecosystems of both Europe and India.
The timing of this initiative is particularly significant in light of the recently concluded India–European Union Free Trade Agreement, a landmark agreement aimed at strengthening economic and trade relations between India and the European Union.
Under this agreement, import tariffs on European wines in India - previously as high as 150% - will be significantly reduced in phases to around 20% for premium wines and about 30% for mid-range wines, making European wines more accessible to the fast-growing Indian market.
This major policy shift opens new opportunities for trade, investment, technology transfer, and joint ventures between European and Indian wine industries.
It will also provide a unique opportunity for Indian state representatives to showcase the potential of their regions, promote viticulture within their states to promote wine industry and explore collaborations with European wine producers.
