Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a federal state in Germany is set to make a global impact on the international tourism industry in the upcoming ITB Berlin.

ITB Berlin held in March every year is an international platform where the global travel and tourism industry expects the best in terms of demands and supplies. Known to be an event where tourism trends are set and participants looking for a new venture in the industry anticipates answers to their questions.

On Oct 12, 2017, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was announced to be the official partner country of the upcoming ITB Berlin to be held in March 2018.

With participants from approximately more than 180 countries, 10,000 exhibitors and around 160,000 visitors, the event like every year will stage a plethora of opportunities for any country to present itself to the world as an ideal tourism destination.

The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern lies to the north-east of Germany and offers travel and tourism activities for travellers of all ages. It shares its borders with Poland in the east, Brandenburg in the south and on Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein in the west. The Baltic Sea in the north forms a natural border for almost 400 kilometres. Schwerin is the state capital.

“Ever since 1991 the partner country of ITB has been an important exhibitor at the show. We are delighted that for the first time in the history of ITB a federal state will be taking on such an important role and that as the official partner country it will be the focus of the travel industry’s attention. As the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show, ITB Berlin is the ideal platform for presenting the state to the media and the public and to highlight the extraordinary hospitality and great diversity of this holiday region” said Dr Martin Buck, Senior Vice President, Travel & Logistics, Messe Berlin.

The sustainable approach

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was able to see off its competitors due to its sustainable tourism concept which matches the activities of the trade show in this field.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is highly committed towards sustainable development. The state also provides forest shares so that tourists can offset their carbon footprint. 85,000 of those shares have already been sold. This new initiative has resulted in extensive reforesting and in turn benefitted the environment.

Tourism is the backbone of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s economy. The annual gross turnover in this sector is around EUR 4.1 billion.

Chairman of the Tourism Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Wolfgang Waldmüller said, “We are looking forward to organising Mecklenburg-Vorpommern appearance at ITB Berlin 2018. This is a big challenge, which we gladly accept, and it gives us the opportunity to score points in the international market. ITB Berlin should not only be the first milestone of the holiday season, it should also make it easier to attract more international attention and increase awareness for tourism in the state.”

MV among Germany’s leading holiday destinations

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern(MV) is called the “Best of Northern Germany”. The rich cultural heritage, diversity, unspoilt nature and availability of leisure activities, make the state an attractive location for tourists.

“With its Baltic coastline and well-known Lake District, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is one of Germany’s most attractive federal states,” said Dr Martin Buck.

Apart from the picturesque locations, the place also offers natural foods of incomparable quality, number of wellness and health facilities and a wide variety of wildlife.

“Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is one of Germany’s leading holiday destinations. As the first federal state to occupy this role we are sending out a strong signal. We want to, and indeed must increase our appeal still further, particularly on the international market. Our partnership with ITB Berlin will also have an impact on the industry, for we want to and we must improve. Our companies and service providers are up against the international competition, and in a rapidly changing market,” said Minister of Economics and Tourism, Harry Glawe.

Indians visiting Germany

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can also expect the number of Indian tourist after this travel trade event, as Germany has been an attractive tourist destination for Indians in the recent times.

According to the officials of the German National Tourist Office (GNTO), Germany has emerged as the number one tourist destination for Indians coming to Europe. “Last year, Germany witnessed around 0.75 million visitor overnights from India. This year we are hoping to attract around 0.8 million Indians,” stated Romit Theophilus, director of marketing and sales, GNTO in India German National Tourist Office (GNTO).

“For 2020, our target is one million. However, we are now focusing for 2030 as we are looking to achieve the two million mark by then.”

Bilateral relations between India and Germany have traditionally been strong. Currently, there are 12 non-stop flights from India to Germany by Air India and Lufthansa German Airlines. There are flights from Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai in India to Frankfurt and Munich in Germany.

Dr Buck, further added, “The trade show will highlight the extraordinary hospitality and great diversity of this holiday region. The positive development of tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the uninterrupted growth in visitors to this federal state are definitely success stories that the world should know.”
