According to the ‘Top 100 Cities Destination Rankings’ report released by Euromonitor International – the global business intelligence and market analysis company, Delhi is the most visited city in India. Currently standing at 21st in the world, it might enter the top ten by 2025.

For more than a decade now, Euromonitor International’s ‘WTM Global Trends Report’ has been accurately predicting major travel trends around the world, looking at how the travel industry is developing in a rapidly changing landscape.

This year too, the report incorporates further insight on how city destinations are at the forefront of tourism growth and innovation and how travel trends are borne out of the opportunities and challenges that cities face.

According to the 10th edition of ‘Top 100 Cities Destination Rankings’ released alongside World Travel Market London this year, Delhi is the most visited city in India. Ranking 21st amongst cities around the world, the city might enter the top ten by 2025 when it’s expected to attract 18.8 million international arrivals.

The ranking is based on research in 100 countries on the number of international arrivals that spend 24 hours or more in a city.

Apart from Delhi, six other Indian cities listed in the ranking recorded a double-digit growth including Mumbai at the 22nd position, Agra at 35th, Chennai at 45th, Jaipur at 48th, and Kolkata at 89th.

Arrivals in India registered a strong volume growth due to the ongoing liberalisation of e-visa policies and three out of the top five leading destinations remained the big metropolitans of Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. These cities are the primary ports of entry into the country whether for leisure or business trips.

According to the report, amongst other cities in India, Agra is the most visited second-tier city due to the attraction of the Taj Mahal, and Jaipur was the other second-tier city known for its palaces and forts.

“The number of inbound arrivals is predicted to grow healthily. Growth is expected to be driven by economic and infrastructure developments in India, which will make it easier for tourists to travel to and within the country. The government is working on improvements to air connectivity, road conditions and networks and accommodation to attract more tourists in the forecast period,” says Shabori Das, Senior Research Analyst at Euromonitor International.

As per the report, Asian cities dominate global destination rankings, thanks to the unstoppable rise of Chinese outbound tourism demand. Amongst the top ten most visited cities around the world are Hong Kong, Bangkok, London, Singapore, Macau, Dubai, Paris, New York, Shenzhen, and Kuala Lumpur.

On the contrary, the performance of the European cities has deterred due to the Eurozone and migrants’ crisis, as well as the Brexit and terrorist attacks. However, despite uncertainty, some European destinations such as Greece, Italy and Spain, profited from unrest in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
