With their ancient architecture- from Renaissance and medieval times, these cities in Europe exude the romanticism that is usually written about in novels. The reflections of art history prevalent around further seem to be boosting the idea of roaming around with a loved one.

This is what couples can be seen seen doing when in Venice- capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region- built on various small islands. The city has no roads, just canals, which locals use for their daily commute. Tourists, a lot of whom are honeymoon couples, can be spotted here, making  memories of their own as they explore the art rich neighbourhood. The Grand Canal thoroughfare, which is lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces, is a popular route. There are also the famed Palazzo Ducale, St. Mark’s Basilica, and Basilica di San Marco. The narrow backstreets are an equal wonder with the surroundings dotted with beautiful churches. As they explore Venice together, couples can also indulge in the delicious gelato ice-cream, Italy is famed to have introduced to the world.

Austria’s capital, Vienna lies near the peaceful Danube River. Besides the artistic line up there are imperial palaces that set the stage for visitors. Capital city of the Czech Republic, Prague is also called the “City of a Hundred Spires”. It is known for its Old Town Square, its heart and historic centre, which boasts of baroque buildings, Gothic churches, and a medieval astronomical clock. Other than its historic and artistic spots, Prague is known for its drinking scene, which revolve around beer. Taking a stroll through this intricately designed city can be delightful. Prague is known for its colourful landscape, which is complete with all the flowers around and an equally vibrant constructions, which set the scene for a romantic getaway.

On the banks of Lake Lucerne, this city in central Switzerland is known for its preserved medieval architecture, and snow-capped mountains that border it. Historic houses decorated with frescoes dot the town squares, making it look like a scene out of romantic Bollywood movie. Lucerne is an ideal starting point for couples to venture into other parts of Switzerland. A trip up its mountains, the Pilatus or the Rigi is a recommended activity for couples to do together.

Granada is a city in southern Spain in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s known for its grand structures of medieval architecture, one of the finest examples of which is the Alhambra, a walled fortress housing 13th- to 15th-century palaces and gardens. A UNESCO world heritage site, the Alhambra is only one of the many ancient structures here but a must visit for tourists for the romantic charm it exudes. The city also has a distinctive gastronomy scene, offering couples the best of fine dining to experience and enjoy.
