Though there have been instances where people in the capital have stretched a helping hand to save lives, but many road accident victims die because the passers by turn a blind eye

Delhi has been a major hotspot for accidents, especially in the recent past. A lot of people lose their lives as the city is increasingly turning a blind eye towards the victims. Witnessing the seriousness of the situation, the government will soon provide incentives for saving a life.

Delhi is popularly known as ‘Dil waalo ki Dilli’ (City full of people with big hearts). But does the capital really live up to its name? There have been innumerable hit-and-run cases in the city and the apathy of people towards road accident victims has been surprising.

In a recent incident, a 40 year old security guard lost his life in West Delhi after a delivery van hit him. As he lied injured on the road, a passerby stole his phone while others ignored him.

Another accident that took the social media by storm was when a 21 year old boy was involved in an unbelievable hit and run. The boy was driving a car at a speed of more than 100 kilometres per hour and hit 3 people before he was caught by the police. He first hit a 40 year old man and went ahead to hit another one just metres away. The boy then took to the wrong lane and hit a 67-year-old property dealer. While two of the victims were more lucky, one did not survive.

The list of the incidents is so long that it is beyond belief. According to a recent government study, the number of deaths in road mishaps is highest in Delhi. “Delhi had the highest number of deaths at around 1,622 due to road accidents,” the report revealed.

Not only New Delhi, but a lot of cases have been reported from other cities and states as well. In 2015, there were approximately 500,000 road accidents in the country, of which 146,000 people were killed.

The governmental push

Taking charge of the matter, the government has decided to launch a scheme that will include rewarding taxi and three wheeler drivers for taking road accident victims to hospital.

A draft in this regard has already been prepared and an incentive will be announced to ensure immediate help to the sufferers in the city.
