Domestic air traffic grows 5.3 pc to 13.6 million in October: DGCA
According to the monthly data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the domestic air passenger traffic in India grew 5.3 pc to 13.6 million in October from 12.6 million in the same month last year.
The data states that budget carrier IndiGo clocked a market share of 63.3 pc flying 8.64 million passengers, closely followed by Air India and Vistara (now merged with Air India), which carried 2.65 million and 1.24 million passengers, respectively.
The numbers of Air India include those of its budget arm, Air India Express, following the merger of its low-cost subsidiary AIX Connect with Air India Express on October 1.
This merged entity now operates as Air India Express under the Air India brand.
The combined market share of both Air India and Air India Express stood at 19.4 pc while Vistara held 9.1 pc of the total domestic market in October. Tata Group which owns both Air India and Vistara saw a combined market share of 28.5 pc.
SpiceJet, another low-cost Indian airline, carried 335,000 travellers while Akasa Air transported 616,000 passengers, accounting for 2.4 pc and 5.4 pc respectively in the overall domestic air passenger traffic in October 2024.
The data adds that IndiGo delivered the highest on-time performance from four metro city airports which include Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad at 71.9 pc, while Alliance Air, a government run airline recorded the lowest on time performance in October, at 54.4 pc among the six major airlines of India.
