JW Marriott adds a signature style to the Kolkata’s luxury hotel portfolio

With the inauguration of the first Marriott property in Kolkata and a few more to come up by the end of this year, the hospitality and MICE sector in eastern India is set to witness a mix of healthy competition and variety in the near future.

JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts maintains its expansion spreein its luxury portfolio with the opening of its eighth hotel in India, JW Marriott Hotel Kolkata. The first hotel in Kolkata and eastern India by Marriott International, the property towers over JBS Haldane Avenue and is located in the heart of the city, minutes from the old central business district. The hotel will feature an elevated guest experience with exceptional comforts and personalised services, housed within a warm environment designed to reflect the spirit of the ‘City of Joy’, Kolkata.

Healthy competition in the hospitality sector

The Marriott-Starwood merger makes the entity the biggest hotel chain in the world and with a firm expansion strategy; they aim to open four more hotels by the end of the year as India, just behind China, is the second largest market in Asia.

Kolkata is rapidly developing its image as a major hub for budget MICE planners and the rise in the number of super-deluxe rooms in the city is expected to see a steep rise. The four major hotels in Kolkata, the Oberoi Grand, Taj Bengal, ITC Sonar and Hyatt, cumulatively offered 917 rooms so far. The recently opened JW Marriott along with the new entrants such as The Westin, ITC Royal Bengal and Holiday Inn, the room count will go up to 2,148 by 2017. The whopping 134 pc rise over the current strength proves the city’s aim to position itself as an attractive convention destination.
