Amrita Sher-Gil: India’s revolutionary woman artist

Recognised by the government as India’s “national treasure”, revolutionary artist Amrita Sher-Gill is known for her unique aesthetic blends of traditional and Western art forms. Known worldwide for her paintings and art, she is also considered as the originator of modern art in India. Her painting, In the Ladies’ Enclosure (1938), fetched INR 378 million (USD 5.14 million) at auction house Saffronart’s sale in Mumbai on July 13, 2021. This is the highest achieved by the artist in any auction and the second-most expensive artwork sold at an auction by an Indian artist.
