GURU DUTT: The Avant-garde Filmmaker

A poetic narrative, a lyrical disposition of sequences and a typical melancholic isolation can define Guru Dutt’s inclination towards stories that were instinctively poignant, but the metaphorical representation of society in his films still remains a subject of cinema. At a time when India was still trying to figure out how to deal with challenges of governing itself, Guru Dutt put the spotlight on the dark underbelly of the society. His films never capitulated to conventional thoughts, adding layers to the female leads in his movies; he was perhaps the pioneer in Indian cinema who conceived an equivalent screen space for both the genders. A tribute to one of the greatest film makers that this country has produced on what would have been his 96th birthday.
