India ranked 83 in Freedom in the World 2020 report, alongside Timor Leste and Senegal. India’s freedom score fell from 75 to 71. It was worst performance for any democracy. The government’s shutdown of Kashmir, the CAA and NRC, crackdown on mass protests, curbs on freedom of expression and state of Indian media are some of key factors behind India’s terrible score. As the country marks World Human Rights Day 2020, its record has only become worse. In an interview with MIGTV, leading social activist Medha Patkar says that since 2014 the government is openly violating and impinging upon the human rights.
