Tribals’ Struggle for Independence Continues
Though India has completed 75 years of independence, the situation of the tribal community in the country has hardly changed, instead in many ways, it has become worse. Numbering over 104 million or 8.6 pc of the total population of India, the tribals have been oppressed, their lands, rich in natural resources like minerals and forests, have been taken away evicting them from the land where they have lived for thousands of years. The land is handed over to big businesses and whenever the tribals have resisted or tried to keep their land and fight for their rights, they have been ruthlessly oppressed, even killed.
