The centre has issued a seal of approval for the development of a green field international airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh, and also to extend runway 26 at Vijayawada airport in the state’s Krishna district.

The central government has issued Environment Clearance (EC) to a green field international airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, for the development of the first phase to be constructed on a PPP mode, at an estimated cost of approximately INR 2.26 billion.

Along with this project, the centre has also given a nod to another proposal- for extending runway 26 at Vijayawada airport, Krishna district, at a cost of INR 144 million.

The Union Environment Ministry gave the final environment clearance based on the recommendations of an expert panel, which reviewed both the proposals.

A separate EC letter has also been issued to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and to the Bhogapuram international airport Corporation Ltd.

According to the proposal, at the Bhogapuram international airport, an airstrip will be developed for operating Airbus-A380 type aircrafts and a new runway will be constructed with all allied facilities in phase-I.

The cost of the proposed airport that is expected to reduce air traffic load at the existing Vishakhapatnam airport, is estimated to be around INR 22.6 billion; and the land for it has already been allotted by Andhra Pradesh government.
