After selling 100 million watches in 50 years, it is time for HMT watches to bid adieu.

Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd, the brand which was once the fashion leader for timepieces in India, witnessed a downfall in its sales after serving people for long five decades. And finally HMT Ltd will have to put an end to its tick tock.

The brand was founded in 1953 and completely controlled and influenced the market with its wonderful variety of watches. HMT Janta, HMT Braille watch for visually impaired, HMT Jhalak – The skeletal beauty, Quartz wristwatch, HMT Pilot watches and many others were a big success.

However, on 6th January, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs declared that the brand would be liquidated following a specific series of steps that will lead to the desistance of the brand. HMT watches Ltd, HMT Chinar watches Ltd, HMT bearings Ltd, which are three different wings of the brand, will cease to function.

HMT watches brand was established in 1961 and started declining after 20 years when the company started to incur losses in 1980s because of the establishment of quartz watches in the market.

HMT watches made a huge loss in 1994 while in the same year Titan made big profits.

After long successful years of survival, HMT lost the battle of the watches to the advanced upcoming companies. The brand gradually lost its capital, customers, and stores in no time but surely not the uniqueness and the charm its products had, praised by all sorts of Indian personalities or common men.

Though the HMT generation has come to an end now, without any doubts the brand will always be remembered as the timekeeper to the nation even after its liquidation.

The echo of the tick-tock will always reverberate.
