Convening policymakers, industry stakeholders and global experts to discuss strengthening safety systems, risk mitigation practices and regulatory frameworks in India’s expanding adventure tourism sector, the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) will host a seminar on Indian Adventure Tourism: Risk Management in New Delhi on May 18,.

In a press statement, the ATOAI, which brings together adventure tour operators from across the world, says that the seminar will focus on strengthening risk management systems and safety standards across India’s adventure tourism sector, which is among the fastest-growing segments of global travel, valued at approximately USD 683 billion in 2024.

It adds that the programme will bring together key stakeholders to deliberate on global and Indian best practices in risk mitigation, comprehensive safety frameworks for land, water and air-based adventure activities, insurance and legal liability mechanisms, strengthening regulatory frameworks and the role of media in shaping awareness, perception and accountability.

According to the statement, while several safety standards have already been developed and others are in progress, there is a strong need for industry-wide standardisation through effective implementation, supported by a uniform regulatory and monitoring framework across states and a robust risk management structure.

The statement says that the association has set a long-term vision of positioning India among the top ten global adventure tourism destinations by 2034. It says achieving this ambition will require coordinated efforts, strong governance mechanisms and uncompromising safety standards across the sector.

The statement adds that the seminar will culminate in the formulation of a National Roadmap for Adventure Tourism Risk Management, aligned with global benchmarks and adapted to India’s diverse geographical landscape.

“India’s immense adventure tourism potential must be anchored in robust risk management and uncompromising safety standards. This seminar is a significant step towards building a unified, future-ready framework that inspires confidence among all stakeholders,” says Ajeet Bajaj, President, ATOAI.
