The one hour boat journey – from the Gateway of India in Mumbai – is quite difficult in this monsoon period, where the waves make the boat swing from left to right. We finally arrive to Elephanta island to discover its medieval caves classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Elephanta Caves are dotted with numerous ancient archaeological remains that reveal evidence of occupation from as early as the 2nd century BC. The rock-cut Elephanta Caves were constructed about the mid-5th to 6th centuries AD.
