Jafar Panahi wins Palme d’Or at 78th Cannes Film Festival

Full Un Certain Regard selection will be screened again in Paris from May 28 to June 3 at Pathé Convention

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi received the Palme d’Or at the 78th Cannes Film Festival for his feature Un Simple Accident. A jury chaired by French actor Juliette Binoche selected the film from 22 titles in competition.

At the 78th Cannes Film Festival, Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi was awarded the Palme d’Or for his feature Un Simple Accident, selected from 22 films in competition by a jury chaired by French actor Juliette Binoche.

In a press statement, Cannes Film Festival organisers say that the Grand Prix was awarded to Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. Additionally, the jury prize was shared between Oliver Laxe’s Sirât and Mascha Schilinski’s Sound of Falling.  

It adds that Kleber Mendonça Filho received best director for his film, The Secret Agent. The best screenplay award was given to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for Jeunes Mères.

As per the statement, the award for Best Actress went to Nadia Melliti for her role in La Petite Dernière, directed by Hafsia Herzi. Wagner Moura was named Best Actor for his performance in The Secret Agent, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho.

The organisers of the international film festival say that a Special Prize was awarded to Bi Gan’s Resurrection. In the Short Films category, the Palme d’Or went to I am Glad You Are Dead Now, directed by Tawfeek Barhom. Additionally, a Special Mention was awarded to Ali by Adnan Al Rajeev.

According to the statement, Cannes Film Festival organisers says that this jury included American actor and filmmaker Halle Berry, Indian director Payal Kapadia, Italian actor Alba Rohrwacher, French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, Congolese director Dieudo Hamadi, Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo, Mexican director Carlos Reygadas and American actor Jeremy Strong.

The international film festival says that the Caméra d’Or, awarded to the best first feature across all sections, was given to The President’s Cake by Hasan Hadi.

The statement says that the full Un Certain Regard selection will be screened again in Paris from May 28 to June 3 at Pathé Convention and UGC Gobelins theatres. India’s sole entry, Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, did not win any awards.
