Viking is set to expand India’s river cruise segment with new sailings through 2029
Viking, a cruise operator based in the United States, is set to expand India’s river cruise segment with new sailings through 2029 and the addition of a second vessel on the Brahmaputra, reflecting growing global demand for inland waterways and structured travel experiences across the country.
In a press statement, Viking says that the Viking Brahmaputra, which is scheduled to begin operations in late 2027. With the addition of the new ship, Viking Ganges, the cruise operator will double its capacity in India. Both vessels will operate on the Brahmaputra in Assam, sailing between Guwahati and Nimati Ghat.
The statement adds that the expansion comes amid growing demand for river cruises in India.
According to Viking, bookings have remained strong since the launch of its India itineraries, prompting the company to open departures for 2027, 2028 and 2029.
The two ships will each accommodate 80 passengers across 40 staterooms. All rooms will include verandas with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. The vessels are being designed specifically for navigation on the Brahmaputra.
The sailings are part of a 15-day itinerary titled Wonders of India, which combines an eight-day river cruise with a land programme. The journey begins and ends in Delhi and includes stops in Agra and Jaipur, forming part of the Golden Triangle circuit. The itinerary features 13 guided tours and covers up to 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, says the company.

On land, travellers visit sites such as the Taj Mahal in Agra, historic areas of Old Delhi and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds, in Jaipur. The river segment focuses on Assam, with stops in Guwahati and Majuli Island, along with visits to Kaziranga National Park, known for its population of one-horned rhinoceroses.
Viking says that it is also offering optional land extensions in Delhi, Dubai, Kathmandu and Cochin and Mumbai, aimed at extending the travel experience beyond the core itinerary.
