Troubled low-cost airline SpiceJet has finalised lease agreements with three aircraft operators for the induction of 20 aircraft under damp and wet lease arrangements, as the airline prepares to expand operations during the Winter Schedule.

In a press statement, the airline says that the aircraft will join its fleet in phases between mid-October and mid-November, ahead of the winter travel peak beginning with the Durga Puja period in October. The additional capacity will strengthen the airline’s domestic and international network and support operations through the winter and following summer season, it says.

The statement adds that with the additional aircraft, SpiceJet plans to operate around 200 daily flights during the winter schedule. The airline will increase frequencies on key routes and strengthen connectivity across markets where demand is expected to remain strong.

The additional capacity is also expected to help ease pressure on airfares during periods of peak demand and bring greater stability to the market, according to the airline.

“We are preparing for the winter season with a clear focus on adding capacity where our passengers need it most. The 20 aircraft we are bringing in will allow us to strengthen our network, add frequencies and offer more travel options during the peak season. These aircraft will support our operations through both the winter and summer peak travel periods, while helping bring greater stability to capacity and ease pressure on airfares. Our aim is to reach around 200 daily flights this winter, while continuing to build our operations in a measured and sustainable manner,” says Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer, SpiceJet.
