In cinema’s long history, barring a few films, sound has often played a supporting role, heightening emotion, defining atmosphere, and punctuating silence. In 2025, a new generation of filmmakers has once again brought sound to the narrative forefront. These five films experiment with audio storytelling, leveraging AI, ambisonic soundscapes and neuro-responsive mixes to deepen human connection.

Bring Her Back

The haunting sci-fi thriller Bring Her Back pushes sound realism to uncharted depths. Director James Morosini collaborated with Dolby’s experimental neuro-spatial division to simulate auditory hallucinations, tuning frequencies to mimic grief-induced memory distortions.

The sound design, mixed in Dolby Atmos Meta, places viewers inside the protagonist’s fractured mind, where whispers and echoes pulse dynamically depending on the listener’s heart rate through wearable-linked screenings. It is not just storytelling; it is sonic empathy.

Critics hailed the film’s “echo chamber realism”, noting how its emotional weight comes from sound cues that change from theatre to home device, adapting to local acoustics via AI recalibration.

Die My Love

Julie Delpy’s Die My Love, adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s explosive novel, turns audio into psychological turbulence. The film interlaces natural outdoor soundscapes, rustling wind, birds, passing trains, with fractured inner monologues and distorted breathing patterns. Sound designer Nicolas Becker, known for Sound of Metal, recorded live inside actors’ throats and chest cavities to capture “organic turbulence”.

This visceral approach transforms auditory space into a battleground of sanity. AI-assisted editing layers these intimate recordings with binaural sound techniques so that the audience perceives spatial disorientation similar to the protagonist’s mental unravelling.

The History of Sound

Oliver Hermanus’ The History of Sound chronicles two men who travel across America during World War I to record voices of ordinary citizens. But unlike traditional war dramas, it turns sonic preservation itself into the narrative. Using adaptive sound-field recording, the film integrates authentic archival voices, some captured with 1918 wax cylinders, reconstructing them with generative audio AI to produce speech fidelity lost to history.

In theatres equipped for Ambisonics 3D playback, viewers could virtually “move” around these voices as if walking through time. The result is a deeply affective experience where the evolution of sound technology mirrors the evolution of human memory. The film demonstrates how AI-assisted restoration now allows cinema to harmonise authenticity and invention, reviving lost voices as living sound characters.

Mountainhead

Robert Eggers’ psychological epic Mountainhead marks a turning point in atmospheric noise design. Collaborating with Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, Eggers programmed tonal frequencies based on geological seismic data. Mountain rumbles, snow whorls, and collapsing echoes were algorithmically transformed into harmonic patterns.

The film’s soundscape evolves as a living organism, sparse dialogue drowned in oscillating drones that mimic tectonic pressure. Viewers report a physical sensation during screenings, as ultra-low-frequency waves trigger muscle vibrations. Combining geophysical AI modelling and psychoacoustic layering, Mountainhead redefines “natural sound” as something simultaneously scientific and mythic.

Naisha — The AI revolution in sonic cinema

While Hollywood dives into minimalist sound art, in India, Naisha, directed by Anubhav Sinha, introduces a wholly new player: AI-driven audio direction. The film’s sci-fi narrative about a sentient voice network is mirrored by how it was created, through generative AI that “learns” emotional tone scene by scene.

Instead of pre-designed compositions, Naisha’s system, developed in partnership with Bengaluru-based startup SonicMind AI, generates live adaptive music and ambience during screenings. The audio dynamically adjusts based on audience reactions, measured through real-time sound sensors and heat maps in select theatres.

Naisha shows how Indian cinema is reimagining not just the screen, but the theatre itself as a responsive audio ecosystem.
