Popular Archie Comics to get a Bollywood makeover
Bollywood is prepping for yet another love story, this time with three international comic characters, which will be re-imagined the Indian way.
Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead, the popular characters from Archie Comics will soon be seen on the silver screen, as Bollywood gets ready to make a live action film on these international characters.
Having enjoyed fame across generations, the characters will now be re-sketched on screen, in an Indian avatar.
A live-action, theatrical based on the iconic characters is in the plans, entertainment company Graphic India has announced, saying that Archie and his friends will be brought to life, Bollywood-style.
“We are supremely excited to partner with the great team at Graphic India to bring Archie and his friends to Bollywood,” Indian media quoted Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater.
“Archie’s lasting and growing presence in India made this move the logical next step as our stellar library of characters continues to expand into other media. It’s a major moment for Archie and its fans around the world,” Goldwater added.
The film will be the first in Bollywood to have been adapted from an international comic. Its production is already in the early stages but an official release date is yet to be announced.
A modern, entertaining screenplay that will resonate with long time Archie fans in India and beyond is being charted out by the producers.
“Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead have been a source of inspiration for numerous Bollywood films over the years, and now it’s time to take them fully into Bollywood in an exciting new twist of a story that we have planned, “said Sharad Devarajan, Co-Founder and CEO, Graphic India.
“These characters have held a special place in the hearts of Indians for decades and we have no doubt that the new Indian cast of Archie and the gang will be an exciting moment for the country.”
A love triangle is no new angle for a Bollywood film. One can easily find a movie, which revolves around the male protagonist oscillating between two ladies.
“The producers should definitely look at it as an inherently Indian film. The mood could be the same but not entirely relying on the Archie vibe. The characters have silently inspired many Bollywood films but now that the association is direct, it’s time to amp up the writing,” Devansh Sharma, an entertainment writer and film critique expresses to Media India Group.
It is not the first time that these characters from a comic book are being given life. Internationally, the comic series is re-enjoying fame with popular TV series Riverdale, which was launched in 2017.
The comic series has sold over two billion copies worldwide, which have been published in over 17 languages and in over 55 countries.
