Eid-ul-fitr is one of the widely celebrated festivals among Muslims across the globe. It marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a 30-day fasting period. In India the festival will be celebrated on Thursday.

Eid-ul-fitr is a special festival among Muslims worldwide. People prepare for it, in a very special way. They would pay Alms or Zakat-al-Fitr (charity) to the poor , buy new clothes, and prepare some best dishes from their home-grown recipes.

The day starts with Eid prayers, mostly organised in an open ground called the ‘ EidGah’. People in Asia congratulate each other by saying ‘Eid Mubarak’ and show the gesture of love and affection by hugging their fellows

After the prayers conclude, people rush to taste the delicacies prepared at their homes.

Some famous dishes prepared on the occasion are:

Nihaari Gosht with Varqi Paratha

Nihaari is one of the best staples enjoyed by Muslim families in New Delhi. It is a mutton dish served with the Varki Paratha and the garnishing of lemon, onion and raw green chilies, adds to its flavour.

Special Lahoori Kebabs

A special chicken kebab made on the occasion, it is delicious and is the favourite one after tandoori or fried chicken.. It is a little juicy and served with plum-tamarind sauce to balance the spicy flavours.

Shahi Biryani

Biryani, a king of dishes, and a dish no one forget to cook for the occasion, is special saffron – milk induced, rice and mutton dish, cooked dum (steam) style and hence is also called Dum Biriyani Nothing is tasty than Shahi biryani, on Eid.

Chicken Korma

A chicken dish is what completes the Eid lunch. This hearty curry dish with distinctive flavours like jaifal, javitri, golmirch, kaju and kevar is mouth watering and tastes best if served with Sheermal, a traditional sweetened bread in India.

Any celebration is incomplete without sweets, and so is true for Eid. Many traditional sweet-dishes are prepared in homes and enjoyed alike by kids and adults.

Meethi Seviyan

One of the sweetest dessert prepared on the occasion of Eid in is MeethiSeviyan. Nothing but a bowl full of seviyan, (semolina noodles) soaked in milk and topped with almonds and pistachios, to celebrate Eid-ul-fitr.

Sheer Khorma

Another favorite dessert is Sheer Khurma, which literally means “milk with dates” in Urdu. It is a vermicelli pudding prepared by Muslims all across the world as an Eid special sweet-dish.

Badam Phirni

It is rice and milk based creamy dessert, topped with almonds and traditionally served in clay-pots. Many would add saffron to it, to give it some extra aroma, colour and flavour. It is a favourite amongst kids, who would treat themselves with multiple servings of it.

Of course food is a major attraction of the festival but people also buy new clothes for the occasion. As a tradition, Muslims across India wear new clothes, visit family members, give Eid cards and presents in form of sweets, small toys or cash to children . The presents are called as “ Eidee”, and are every child’s delight.

For women and girls, besides cooking lot of delicacies, it is time to have some extra glow. They apply beautiful design of Mehndi (Hinna, a natural temporary dye) on their palms and feet.

Kids have some extra fun by going to different parks to enjoy swings and other festive activities. For them Eid is the happiest day and they enjoy it to the fullest. Putting on new clothes, buying toys and roaming with their friends is what they do all through the 3 days of Eid celebration.

In India the Mosques and Idgahs remain crowded like Aishbagh Idgah in Lucknow, Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad and Jama Masjid in New Delhi. Not only Muslims but also non-Muslims in India come to greet their Muslim friends on this day, enjoy the festivities and be a part of the traditions
