Bharat Jodo Yatra resumes after week-long break

After a week-long break for Christmas and New Year, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was joined by thousands of supporters at the resumption of Bharat Jodo Yatra this morning in New Delhi. Gandhi prayed at a Hanuman temple at Kashmere Gate before leading the march towards the Uttar Pradesh border in eastern Delhi. Congress workers alleged that police had erected barricades on the roads to block the Yatra and it led to sprawling jams in the area.

Congress workers are enthusiastically supporting the yatra that has been going on for almost three months and has covered about 3000 km, travelling from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu to Delhi. “Such initiatives are good for the party as it helps revive the party machinery all over and motivates party workers like me. They should undertake more such missions,” Dibakar Patra, a Congress worker from Odisha tells Media India Group.

The workers say that the party leadership needs to take up important issues that the people of the country are facing. ”It is important to give voice to the concerns of the people and it is good that we are raising the issues like inflation, inequality, unemployment and farmers’ situation in the country,” says Vikram Singh who joined the Yatra at Badarpur.

In the evening, the Yatra reached Uttar Pradesh border at Loni where Priyanka Gandhi welcomed the marchers. The Yatra will continue until 26 January when it will conclude at Srinagar.
