South Africa’s 29th Freedom Day celebrations in New Delhi

The event coincides with the 27th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption as South Africa's highest legislation

With the theme of “Consolidating and Safeguarding Democratic Gains”, South African High Commissioner to India J S Ndebele organised a soiree in New Delhi on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of South African Freedom Day.

To mark the 29th anniversary of South African Freedom Day, South African High Commissioner to India J S Ndebele recently organised a soiree in New Delhi with the theme of “Consolidating and Safeguarding Democratic Gains”. According to a press statement by the High Commission, the event was a gathering of key stakeholders from across nations to participate in conversations surrounding the values of democracy and its merits for society.

The celebration of the anniversary of the first-ever democratically held elections in South Africa witnessed the presence of Chief Guest, Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture of India. In her speech, Lekhi expressed appreciation of the High Commission for organising a successful evening of fostering diplomatic connections between the two countries.

Over 500 guests attended the event, including representatives of the Indian government, diplomats from other countries, business partners, and South African acquaintances. The event coincides with the 27th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption as South Africa’s highest legislation.

“I would like to extend my gratitude and deepest appreciation to all the dignitaries for joining us in celebrating this significant occasion. This year marks the 29th anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections as we observe National Freedom Day. Our democracy has played a crucial role in restoring the dignity of millions of South Africans and changing our lives for the better,” says Joel Sibusiso Ndebele.

“This year we also commemorate the 27th anniversary of the enactment of the Constitution as the supreme law in our country as well as honour our military and defence personnel by celebrating National Armed Forces Day. Our celebrations offer South Africans the opportunity to reflect on the progress made in transforming South African society while acknowledging the great possibilities and enormous work still to be done for a bright future.” he added.

“I am extremely humbled to be part of this momentous occasion today as we honour not one but two important milestones in the history of South Africa. This year, we celebrate the 29th Freedom Day for South Africa and mark 30 years of bilateral relations with India. Over these years we have been extremely fortunate to share strong partnerships with India and other nations across the globe,” said Neliswa Nkani, Hub Head – Middle East, India, and South East Asia, South African Tourism.

The statement says that an extensive and shared history of friendship and solidarity serves as the foundation for South Africa and India’s relationship. Additionally, this year marks the conclusion of 30 years of bilateral ties between the two countries. The countries have developed significant partnerships over time to promote economic progress and have been the closest allies, it says.

“Our partnership with India has been extremely special as the bond between the two nations dates back over a century. India has been a steadfast ally to us, and we are proud of the many achievements that we have accomplished together. It will always be our endeavour to make such similar connections with every country and achieve greater heights.” she added.
