Deomali: A hidden treasure in the Eastern Ghats of Odisha

This mountain is nestled in the Chandragiri-Pottangi sub-range of the Eastern Ghats and is considered one of the most scenic, yet relatively unexplored, destinations in the region.

The mountain peak’s elevation and remote location contribute to its charm, offer a tranquil environment surrounded by rich biodiversity. The peak is believed to be abundant in natural resources, including limestone, bauxite, and gemstones. The area is also home to several tribal communities, such as the Parajas, Bhumia, Kandhas, Bhotias, and Malis, who reside in the surrounding villages.

The landscape around Deomali is characterised by verdant forests, rolling hills, and an array of wildlife. The region is known for its flourishing flora and fauna, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. The best time to visit Deomali is between October and March when the weather is at its most favourable for trekking, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures.

The hilltop provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, which is often shrouded in mist, further enhancing the sense of peace and isolation. Duduma waterfall

One can also visit the Duduma waterfall nearly 110 km away from the Deomali peak. This waterfall, formed by the Machkund river, cascades from a height of 175 m into a deep gorge, creating a stunning visual spectacle. Duduma waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and offers a serene environment that attracts visitors. The waterfall is also known for its religious significance. Local tribal communities revere the site as sacred and associate it with Goddess Duduma, a form of Parvati. In addition, the nearby Matsya Tirtha, a fish pond, is home to a variety of fish species, further enhancing the spiritual and natural appeal of the area.

Tribal Museum

About 60 km away from Deomali is Tribal Museum, located right behind the Sabar Srikhetra Jagannath Temple. The museum has been established to promote the culture, traditions, and daily practices of the indigenous tribal communities of the region. The collection here includes a range of items, such as traditional costumes, musical instruments, and hand-woven textiles, all of which reflect the rich cultural heritage of the local tribes. The museum provides valuable insight into the lives of the tribal people, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about their customs, rituals, and artistic expressions.

Sabar Srikhetra

Not far from the Tribal Museum is the Sabar Srikhetra, a significant religious site. Built in 1972, the temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath and is considered to be one of the largest temples in the district. The temple is not only a place of worship but also serves as a symbol of unity and brotherhood, transcending religious boundaries.

One of the major events held at the temple is the Srikhetra Rath Yatra, which is second in importance only to the grand Rath Yatra held in Puri. The festival attracts a large number of devotees and visitors, and it also features a display of tribal culture, with local communities actively participating in the celebrations. The Rath Yatra is an opportunity to witness the fusion of religious devotion and tribal customs, highlighting the spiritual and cultural diversity of the region.

Kolab Dam

In addition to its cultural and spiritual attractions, the Kolab Dam, is also a must visit and is over 70 km away from Deomali, located at an altitude of approximately 910 m above sea level. The dam, which stands on the Kolab river, plays a crucial role in generating hydroelectric power, supporting irrigation, and providing drinking water to the surrounding areas.

The dam is also known for its scenic beauty, with the surrounding hills and lush greenery creating a picturesque setting. The area around the dam is a popular spot for tourists, who can enjoy panoramic views of the landscape and engage in leisure activities such as boating.
