Century Mill Workers’ Fight for Right to Work

For well over three years now, nearly 1,000 workers of a textile mill at Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, owned by Century Textiles, part of Kumarmangalam Birla group, have been protesting against an attempt by the management to shut the mill and sell the 84 acres of land that it sits on, due to a spike in land rates in the area. The workers have moved the court against the bid by Birlas to offer voluntary retirement or VRS to workers, saying that the mill remained viable, but the Birlas were trying to cash in on a booming demand for land, rather than run a functioning factory. The Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court is set to rule on this case later this week and workers remain hopeful of win so that they can resume work at the earliest.
