With Israel retaining its position as Ladakh’s largest international source market, the Union Territory recorded a 43.48 pc increase in tourist arrivals in June, while foreign visitor numbers rose 99.46 pc, reflecting stronger demand from both domestic and overseas travellers.

According to a press statement, a total of 1,07,740 tourists visited Ladakh in June, compared with 75,089 during the same month last year. Foreign tourist arrivals rose 99.46 pc to 6,680, up from 3,349 in June 2025.

The statement adds that Israel remained the largest source market for foreign visitors, followed by Thailand, the United States, Vietnam, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Taiwan, Russia, Italy, South Korea and Spain.

Between January and June 2026, Ladakh received 2,25,286 tourists, including 2,11,645 domestic and 13,641 foreign visitors.

The administration attributed the increase to improvements in tourism infrastructure, connectivity and measures aimed at expanding tourism beyond the summer season.

Recent initiatives include simplifying regulatory procedures, reducing compliance requirements, granting industry status to hotels and guesthouses, improving air and road connectivity, expanding visitor facilities and encouraging private investment in tourism, says the statement.

The administration has also promoted winter tourism, adventure tourism, high-altitude trekking, wildlife tourism, rural tourism, wellness tourism, cultural tourism, spiritual tourism and astro-tourism to attract visitors throughout the year.

According to statement, the national and international sporting events, cultural festivals and tourism campaigns have also helped increase Ladakh’s visibility in domestic and overseas markets.

Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor, says tourism remains one of Ladakh’s key economic sectors and that the increase in arrivals reflects efforts to strengthen the destination while supporting livelihoods linked to the tourism industry.
