90 pc nations miss UN climate deadline: Climate Action Network
13 of the 195 countries have submitted new NDCs under Paris Agreement
90 pc countries fail to meet the deadline to submit newly revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Only five developed countries and eight other countries out of 195 countries have updated its national climate action plan.
Under the Paris Agreement, every country is obligated to update its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) plan every five years, outlining their strategies to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts.
In a press statement, the Climate Action Network says that only 13 of the 195 parties, that is under 10 pc, to the agreement have submitted their revised NDCs. Alarmingly, only five of these are developed countries, those expected to lead the global charge in curbing emissions.

“It’s shocking that only 13 out of 195 countries have updated their NDCs, with the majority of rich nations not submitting on deadline, exposing the alarming lack of political will,” said Tasneem Essop, Executive Director of CAN International.
The press release states this year’s submissions should extend their new NDCs to 2030 and outline new objectives for the period up to 2035.
The statement adds the countries that submitted their NDCs on time include Andorra, Brazil, Ecuador, the Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Singapore, St. Lucia, Switzerland, the UAE, the UK, Uruguay, the USA, and Zimbabwe, whereas major players like the European Union are lagging just weeks before the crucial COP30 climate summit in Brazil.
CAN says these plans are crucial for limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and it is a major concern for developed and rich countries to urgently submit their NDCs in line with 1.5°C pathways.
