NPCI expands UPI ‘One World’ wallet service to foreign inbound travellers
To facilitate travel within India and to allow foreigners to use Indian digital payments system, the National Payments Corporation of India has launched ‘UPI One World’ wallet for inbound travellers from all countries visiting India. This initiative by NPCI aims to provide international visitors with a seamless, real-time digital payment experience.
In a press statement NPCI says that this innovative service will also be available to the delegates attending the World Heritage Committee meeting in New Delhi.
It adds that delegates and other foreign visitors will be able to immerse themselves in India’s rich culture, cuisine and diverse experiences with the ease of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments.
NPCI says that it can be obtained through authorised Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) issuers at airports, hotels, and exchange locations after completing KYC with a passport and visa. It will also be available at Pragati Maidan Expo Centre for World Heritage Committee delegates. Wallets can be loaded with cash or other payment methods.
It adds that international travellers can also use it to pay at merchant locations by scanning QR codes. Any unused balance can be transferred back to the original payment source, adhering to foreign exchange regulations. This service is the result of collaboration between NPCI, IDFC First Bank, and Transcorp International Limited, under the Reserve Bank of India’s guidance.
“We are thrilled to offer UPI experience to the international guests visiting India through UPI One World. This move aims to enhance the experience for visitors by equipping them with UPI, the most preferred payment choice among Indians. International travellers can organise their financial needs using UPI. It allows for convenient loading and enables the transfer of any unused balance back to the original payment source. By enabling foreign travellers to experience the real-time payments system developed by India, we are taking a significant stride towards creating a more interconnected global digital payments ecosystem,” says NPCI spokesperson.
