Air India introduces ‘basic’ fare option, expanding customer choice in economy class on domestic travel
Air India, a Tata Group airline, has introduced a new ‘Basic’ fare on select domestic routes, offering a lower-cost travel option for value-conscious passengers. Available in Economy Class, the fare includes a 15 kg checked baggage allowance, 7 kg cabin baggage allowance and complimentary tea or coffee service, while meals can be purchased separately.
In a press statement the airline says that the Basic fare complements its existing branded fare families-Value, Classic and Flex, which were introduced in 2024 as part of efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience. While these fare families continue to offer complimentary meals and additional bundled benefits at progressively higher price points, the Basic fare provides an unbundled alternative for travellers seeking lower fares.
It adds that the introduction of the new fare reflects its consumer-centric approach, recognising that different travellers have different travel needs and spending preferences. By unbundling selected services, the airline allows passengers to pay only for what they require, while continuing to provide full-service options for those who prefer a more inclusive travel experience.
According to the statement customers booking the Basic fare will have the flexibility to pre-purchase meals up to 24 hours before departure. Meal options include Vegetarian, Non-Vegetarian, Jain and Diabetic meals. In case of flight schedule changes or reaccommodation, pre-purchased meals will automatically be transferred to the new flight or refunded if unavailable.
According to Air India, the Basic fare is currently available exclusively through the airline’s direct channels, including its website, mobile application, contact centre and airport ticketing offices.
The airline says it will closely monitor customer response and feedback during the pilot phase to determine the future direction and potential expansion of the fare category.
