Delhi has been bashed as the crime capital of the country many a times now. And without a doubt, the city succeeds in living up to the title, which is a special cause of concern for women.

There are fairly a large number of reasons because of which Delhi is considered as one of the most risky and unsafe places in India. The city is significantly a matter of concern for women, who are an easy and frequent targets for the criminals. Rapes, molestations, chain snatching, robbery, theft and other crimes are taking a toll on the safety of the people in the city. Because Delhi is the capital and also a place where major political and other important events take place, it is the prime district for criminals and terrorists to carry out their activities.

In the past few years, there have been numerous rape cases in Delhi as compared to other cities in the country. According to the recently released reports by the Delhi police, approximately 522 people were victims to varied criminal offences in the city in the year 2015, out of which 151 crimes took place on the roads. The Delhi Police Commissioner informed that 70 pc of the victims in rape cases were between 21-35 years.

“On my way to college, I feel disgusted when I see men ogling at me. And the worst part is that I cannot do anything about it,’’ said Saumya Bansal, a student of Miranda House, Delhi University.

According to a data released by the police in 2015, an average of 6 rapes and 15 molestations took place per day, suggesting disturbing number. The frequency with which rapes are happening in Delhi is increasing along with the rise in the number of criminal cases.

Apart from rapes, eve-teasing, racism, sexual remarks and molestations have also skyrocketed in the city. Around 5,192 cases of molestation and 1,444 cases of eve-teasing were recorded till December 15, 2015 as against 4,182 molestations and 1,282 eve-teasing cases in 2014.

As reports suggest, there has been a massive increase of 200 pc in criminal activities in Delhi. Shortage of resources, the cop-criminal ties and slow administration could be some of the reasons behind the inflated crime in the city.

The government, as a measure, especially against women offences, is launching women safety applications along with giving recognition to the anti-rape in 2013. Also, GPS installations on public vehicles and helpline numbers for women have been made effective since 2012 for the safety of women in the country.

The Delhi police, in its part, offered that if the Constitution permits shooting or hanging on spot, it will not refrain from doing so.

Witnessing the speed with which the criminal activities are rising and also the measures that the government is taking, let’s hope for a safer Delhi with fingers crossed this year.
