On the occasion of World Music Day, here is a look at few of the Bollywood music-based movies.

Music has been a part of the Indian culture since ages and with its widespread range -of simple melodies to complex ragas, devotional music to folk music- is an integral part of Indian life. Even a recent survey had found that Indian consumers spend 21.58 hours per week listening to music. Bollywood movies are widely known for their song-and-dance sequences but the industry has also produced movies based on music and musicians, that has been widely appreciated by its audiences.

The movie Baiju Bawra (1952) may be termed as the first Bollywood movie with a singer as protagonist. It depicted the tale of a young talented singer, Baiju Bawra who is on a mission to defeat Tansen (greatest classical vocalist in Emperor Akbar’s court) in a musical duel. Abhimaan (1973) and Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) both dealt with two singers getting married and their journey through ego clashes and career issues. While Khamoshi-The Musical (1996) told the story of a young girl with deaf and mute parents aspiring to be a musician and what role music  plays in her life, Sur: The Melody of Life (2002) was a music-based movie with singer Lucky Ali as a music teacher who is looking for a special student whom he can polish and turn into a masterpiece.
