Kamal Haasan to be given prestigious French award

Kamal Haasan, a 61 year old actor from South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, will become the second Tamil star after thespian Sivaji Ganesan to be made the Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et Lettres ( Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters), one  of the highest civilian distinction by the French government . He will be presented the award in a special ceremony.

Haasan dedicated to his audience and admirers his nomination as a recipient of the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. It is a prestigious French order of merit that is conferred to eminent personalities in the field of performing arts, literature and art. The French government has recognised the contributions of Haasan to the world of cinema through this prestigious decoration.

“On this occasion I bow before my more deserving forerunners Mr Satyajit Ray and Mr Sivaji Ganesan who made even the common man realise the value of the Chevalier award. This award humbles me rather than stiffen me with pride”, reacted Haasan in an audio message to thank French Ambassador to India, Alexandre Ziegler, who broke the good news to him.

Haasan was congratulated on the social media site Twitter by many big names in the Tamil film industry including the renowned actor Rajnikanth.

(“The Chevalier goes only to the Nadigar Thilagam (finest actor) of our generation. My heartfelt congratulations to my dear friend, Haasan.”)

“The distinction, which is yet another laurel for the actor, is in recognition of his high level of artistic excellence and his distinguished career achievements “said the actor’s publicist, in a statement released by him . Earlier this year, Kamal Haasan was given the Henri Langlois award, a prestigious cinema award in France.

Haasan is a recipient of  several Indian awards as well, including the Padma Bhushan in 2014, the third highest civilian award, from the Government of India. He has had a long, illustrious career that began in his childhood with the film “Kalathur Kannamma ” in 1959. He continued his career in acting but also worked as a director, producer, playback singer and songwriter in some films. Recently, has worked in movies such as “Viswaroopam” (2013) and in “Dasavathaaram” (2008), where he played ten different roles.

Other Indians who were made by France Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters include veteran musician Balamuralikrishna, and actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Nandita Das and Shah Rukh Khan, making Haasan’s achievement a big honour for the country.
