French defence and electronics firm Thales has announced that as part of the ongoing Scorpion programme, it has bagged an order to equip French Army Serval armoured vehicles with Syracuse IV Satcom stations, awarded by the French defence procurement agency (DGA).

In a press statement, Thales says that the Neptune contract marks a significant leap in military technology. It involves supplying thirty dual-band X/Ka satellite communication stations, specifically tailored to enhance the capabilities of French Army Serval armoured vehicles through advanced Syracuse IV Satcom systems.

Thales adds that the new Syracuse IV Satcom stations will be integrated into the serval light multi-role armoured vehicles as part of the Scorpion programme development. It adds that the stations will serve as on-the-pause (OTP) tactical communication nodes, providing the high-throughput satellite communications services required by the systems deployed by the French Army.

Thales says that the Neptune contract marks a milestone in the Syracuse IV ground segment programme. It follows previous orders for Satcom stations on French Navy vessels and submarines, and for fixed and mobile stations for land and air forces, including Mercure OTM stations for the Griffon and Serval vehicles and airborne stations for the French Air Force’s wide-body aircraft.

The statement adds that the initial iteration of the Syracuse IV ground segment, deployed by the French defence procurement agency (DGA) in late 2023, enhances joint communications. It ensures secure, high-data-rate Satcom services with robust protection against jamming, interference, cyberattacks, ensuring end-to-end connectivity and tri-service interoperability.
