Khaled EL-Enany elected 12th Director General of UNESCO

The former Egyptian Minister of Antiquities and Tourism has been elected as the 12th UNESCO DG.

Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz has been elected as the 12th Director General of UNESCO, succeeding Audrey Azoulay will take charge of his position on November 15. El-Enany is the first person from an Arab country to be elected to this position.

The General Conference of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has elected Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Ali Ezz, Egypt’s former Minister of Antiquities and Tourism, as the 12th Director-General of UNESCO.

In a press statement, UNESCO says that  El-Enany, who will take charge of the position on November 15 for a four-year tenure won a total of 172 votes and will succeed Audrey Azoulay.

The statement said that El-Enany, an Egyptology professor at Helwan University in Egypt, has previously served as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality and also holds a PhD in Egyptology from the Paul-Valery Montpellier 3 University in France. 

The statement also said that the newly elected Director-General of UNESCO has been a member of several international learned societies and was also appointed as the Special Ambassador for Cultural Tourism by the World Tourism Organisation. 

The statement also said that El-Enany is the first person from an Arab country to be to be elected as DG.
