Airbnb has announced its travel trends for fall 2024, listing most popular domestic and international destinations that have captured the interest of Indian travellers for the upcoming festive season. In the domestic list, Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh is a surprise entry.

Airbnb, an online platform offering short-term homestays in different countries, released a report on domestic travel trends in fall 2024 among Indian travellers.

“The festive and autumn season presents a unique opportunity for Indian travellers to explore both domestic and international destinations. We’re seeing an exciting trend in travel patterns, with more Indians seeking unique travel experiences in culturally rich cities or enjoying the serene beauty of international landscapes,” says Amanpreet Bajaj, General Manager for India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

According to travel trends for fall 2024, popular domestic destinations for Indian travellers during the upcoming festive season include popular touristic destinations like Lakshadweep, Ujjain, and Munsiyari in Uttarakhand. But topping the list is a surprising newcomer, Kanpur, the site of the India-Bangladesh Test Match that was held in the city.

Here is a glimpse into the domestic choices of Indian travellers for the upcoming festive season, which provide a perfect melange of culture and natural beauty.

Although known to be a bustling industrial town, Kanpur is a city brimming with cultural, heritage and religious sites waiting to be explored. According to recent trends from Airbnb, the city is a top choice for travelers, drawn by its vibrant and captivating Dussehra celebrations which include larger than life carnivals and the burning of effigies of Ravana in about 100 locations around the city.

The city also features numerous temples of deep religious significance, some landmarks include the Radha-Krishna Temple, Kaanch Temple, Sri Hanuman Temple in Panki, Siddhnath Temple, and Jajamu Anandeshwar Temple.

Situated approximately 400 km off the eastern coast in Kerala, in the Laccadive Sea, Lakshadweep is a breath-taking archipelago which could be referred to as a paradise on Earth owing to its serene and stunning natural wonders.

The name Lakshadweep comes from a Sanskrit term meaning a hundred thousand islands. The archipelago, which is also India’s smallest union territory, comprises 36 islands renowned for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, pristine forests, and stunning white sandy beaches.

These islands offer an ideal retreat for travellers seeking a peaceful and relaxing vacation away from the bustling tourist crowds, allowing tourists to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Ujjain, a key spiritual destination, in Madhya Pradesh in central India, has gained attention in travel trends for its unique spiritual aura. This city beckons travellers from India and beyond with its iconic temples, sacred ghats, ancient heritage sites, and vibrant festivals.

The city is home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (a devotional representation of Shiva, a Hindu god) in India, the Mahakaleshwar temple. The temple is famous for its Bhasma Aarti ritual, an early morning scared ceremony which involves scared ashes and attracts devotees from all over the country.

Some other notable landmarks include the Bhartrihari Caves along the banks of the Kshipra River, the serene Maharishi Sandipani Ashram, and the historic Kaliadeh Palace. Ujjain is also home to the Kumbh Mela, one of India’s most significant and largest religious gatherings, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike.

Bordered by the towering snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas, equidistant from the borders with Tibet and Nepal, Munsiyari is a small village located about 440 km from Dehradun, capital of Uttarakhand. The quaint little town serves as a base camp for numerous trek expeditions including the ones to Ralam, Milam Glaciers and the Nanda Devi Peak.

This town in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand is steeped in history, having once served as a vital stop on the ancient salt route from Tibet to the plains of India. Visitors can also savour breath-taking views of sunrises and sunsets over the surrounding peaks, making it a captivating destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
