Hidden high in the eastern Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh, about 560 km from the state’s capital, Itanagar, Anini is a quiet and remote town in the Dibang Valley district of the state.

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, thick forests and winding rivers, Anini offers a peaceful retreat far from the noise of modern city life.

Few travellers make it this far, which only adds to its charm. If one is looking for untouched beauty, fresh mountain air and an escape into nature, Anini is the place to be in.

Nestled at an altitude of over 1,900 m, the town remains cool and pleasant throughout the year. Mist often rolls down from the mountains, giving the whole valley a dreamlike atmosphere.

Reaching Anini is a bit of an adventure in itself. While Tezu Airport in the city of Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh, located just about 15 km from Anini is the closest airport, most travellers prefer to start their journey from Dibrugarh in Assam. From there, a long but scenic road trip takes you first to Roing, and then over the beautiful Mayudia Pass to Anini.

The final stretch, though rough at times, is filled with breath-taking views of valleys, cliffs and forests. Due to its remote location, facilities in Anini are basic but comfortable and visitors are advised to plan ahead and carry essentials.

With no mobile signal in many areas and only limited internet access, Anini encourages visitors to slow down, disconnect and be present.

Arunachal’s cultural heartland

Anini is the cultural heartland of the Idu Mishmi tribe, one of the oldest tribal communities in Arunachal Pradesh. Known for their rich traditions, unique handwoven textiles and close bond with nature, the Idu Mishmi people are proud of their heritage.

Their homes are built in traditional styles and festivals like Reh, which give visitors a rare look at their age-old customs, dances and rituals. Visitors who come with curiosity and respect are often welcomed warmly.

A quiet escape

There is no rush in Anini. Days pass slowly here, perfect for gentle walks, quiet reflection, or simply sitting and taking in the views. There are trekking routes nearby, and birdwatchers will find plenty to enjoy in the forests.

Wildlife lovers can visit areas like the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding forests, where animals such as red pandas, clouded leopards and rare birds still roam freely.

One of the region’s most striking features is the Dibang River, which flows through the valley in graceful curves, adding to the scenic beauty.
