Chembra Mala: Hidden jewel of Wayanad in Kerala
Standing at 2100 m above the sea level, Chembra is the highest peak in the Wayanad Hill Range and is a wonderland for tourists who can explore the mountain, the area’s rich foliage and the renowned heart-shaped lake here. In addition to providing a comprehensive view over the entire Wayanad district, the Chembra Peak also provides a good view of Kozhikode, Malappuram and Niligiri districts.
The trip to Chembra Peak is regarded as one of the best hikes available in Kerala, for which prior permission is needed from the Forest Officer in Meppadi, which is realtively easy to obtain.
It takes about four hours to complete the 4.5 km ascent that begins at the foothill of Chembra, which is encircled by a wide expanse of tea estates. After climbing for about 1000 m, trekkers reach a watchtower that provides a glimpse of the Chembra Peak and its surroundings. The climb continues for another 2 km when trekkers reach a unique, heart-shaped lake. The Hridayathadakam Lake is a popular spot for trekkers and tourists to take a break and enjoy the refreshing waters of the lake. The last part of the climb is also about 1000 m and take the trekkers to the summit.
As hikers walk through the woodland, they are revitalised and refreshed by gentle winds that playfully blow them. It is easy to fall in love with the beautiful nature all over again after hearing the crackling of dry leaves under our feet, the tiny shafts of sunlight piercing through the heavy branches, the joyous chattering of birds and the faint sounds of beetles in the distance. It is once-in-a-lifetime experience to wade through the dense forests of the Wayanad Hill Range and find oneself in the middle of a pristine and unspoiled environment.
Another captivating vista is of the Banasura Sagar Dam, located 42 km away from Chembra Peak. The enormous dam appears to be a shiny silver metal disc resting between the trees as it stands out in the surrounding greenery. A hike up to the Banasura Peak is packed with streams, varied flora, fauna, lush tropical greenery and spectacular waterfalls. Adventures like speed boating, horse racing and camel rides are also easily accessible. One can also visit the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Edakkal Caves. Suchipara Falls is another location which is a great place for rock climbing here. The Nirur Shiva Mandir, Shri Nath Mandir and other well-known temples are all located adjacent to the dam.
