In a significant push for regional connectivity, six National Highway projects worth INR 32.14 billion were launched in Meghalaya to improve transport links, reduce congestion and strengthen connectivity with Bangladesh.
According to the press statement the package includes the Pynursla Bypass, Jowai Bypass, Tura Bypass, the Selsella–Simbukolgre–Goeragre road project and upgrades to sections of the Shillong–Dawki corridor.
The statement adds that the projects are expected to improve traffic movement, road safety and access to remote areas across Meghalaya.

The projects were unveiled during a programme held at Polo Grounds in Shillong in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, Conrad K. Sangma, state ministers and senior officials.
The statement further adds that the stahe Shillong–Dawki corridor, which connects Meghalaya with Bangladesh through Tamabil, is expected to reduce congestion in Upper Shillong and improve travel, trade and tourism connectivity between the two regions.
The Pynursla Bypass is expected to improve access to Dawki and the India-Bangladesh border, while the Jowai Bypass aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve commuter movement. The Tura Bypass will divert traffic away from populated areas and strengthen connectivity towards the Dalu border, says the statement.

According to statement, the Selsella–Simbukolgre–Goeragre road project will improve connectivity in West Garo Hills and link the region with the upcoming Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge over the Brahmaputra.
It adds that the projects are expected to support tourism in destinations such as Dawki and Cherrapunji, facilitate cross-border trade and improve transportation for agriculture, handicrafts and local businesses.
Addressing the gathering, Gadkari said the Centre remains committed to expanding highway infrastructure across Meghalaya and the Northeast to improve transportation and connectivity.
Sangma, said Meghalaya has received infrastructure and road projects worth over INR 500 billion in recent years, contributing to connectivity and economic activity across the state.
