The tests, completed between April and June, confirm the readiness of Thales' performance systems for the Inspiration-class frigates
French defence and electronics company Thales has reached a major milestone in the Type 31 frigate programme of the United Kingdom Royal Navy, having completed Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) for both the combat and mission systems.
In a press statement, Thales says that the achievement emphasise the company’s role as a key defence partner to the Royal Navy, delivering advanced naval technologies for the next generation of British Warships.
The statement adds that the tests, completed between April and June, confirm the readiness of Thales’ performance systems for the Inspiration-class frigates.
The programme delivered in close partnership with Babcock and the Royal Navy now moves forward to land-based integration ahead of onboard installation on HMS Venture, the first of five Type 31 vessels being built at Babcock’s Rosyth facility.
Thales says that central to the delivery is Thales’s Tacticos Combat Management System (CMS), described as the “operational heart” of the Type 31.
It adds that the CMS coordinates sensor control, threat assessment, and weapons deployment, making it a crucial asset in ensuring combat readiness and operational effectiveness at sea.
The statement says that the Mission System FAT was finalised in April, followed by Combat System FATs in June. It featured the newest software release of Tacticos, developed in the Netherlands, ensuring the frigates are equipped with advanced command and decision-making capabilities.
“This represents another demonstration of Thales’s proven ability to deliver integrated naval mission systems to the highest standards. Working closely with our Royal Navy and Babcock colleagues, we are delighted to have completed this critical stage,” says Andy Laing, Managing Director of Above Water Systems UK, Thales.
According to the statement, the successful FATs now enable the programme to progress to the Shore Integration Facility, where the systems will undergo further testing before being installed on HMS Venturer. The vessel is currently under construction and is set to play a key role in enhancing the Royal Navy’s global presence.
“This marks another significant step forward for the Type 31 programme and reflects the strength of our collaboration with Thales and wider industry partners,” says Paul Watson, Arrowhead Managing Director, Babcock.
