Critically acclaimed painting by Picasso, La Plage, Juan-les-Pins has been bought by the key person at Lodha Group, and is up at display at his new luxury home in Mumbai.

From Christie’s, a British auction house to its new owners- the Lodhas, the process took 18 months before La Plage, Juan-les-Pins could make its way to India. Dating back to 1937, the painting is one of the most critically acclaimed works of Picasso, currently in possession of the top banana of the Lodha Group.

“We decided on a Picasso because he is one of the world’s most renowned artists. He has had a profound impact on Art and Culture of the 20th century,” Abhishek Lodha, MD, Lodha Group told the Indian press.

A photo- certificate from the Picasso Administration signed by the artist’s son Claude Picasso, certify the work’s authenticity.

The painting is now being exhibited in the metropolis of Mumbai, where the Lodhas reside. The tea room in the new luxury home at Altamount Road will house La Plage, Juan-les-Pins.

Earlier, the painting was at a gallery in Paris. It was purchased in a private sale for a confidential amount.

The new owner, Lodha had been looking at different artworks for starting his luxury art collection. The aim was to “bring together the very best of art and sculpture from across the globe,” he said.

“We were keen to have a masterpiece. We spent a lot of time seeking advice from art aficionados, attending auctions and holding discussions with private galleries for this rare acquisition,” he said. “I am thankful to all those who helped us in acquiring this masterpiece, especially Amin Jaffer (formerly with Christie’s).”

The painting depicts the Mediterranean Sea, painted in bright reds and contrasting yellows, greens and blues, and with thick black brushstrokes. “Picasso painted La Plage, Juan-les-Pins in the summer of 1937 at Mougins, a small town a few miles from Cannes. He would spend time at the beach at Juan-les-Pins with Dora Maar (photographer and painter) and other friends, including Paul Éluard (French poet) and his wife,” said Lodha.

Critiques say La Plage, Juan-les-Pins is a soothing piece, and a reflection of Picasso’s peaceful state of mind post the Spanish War, although with projections of the underlying conflict.
