Nasscom awards GNC Chennai for highest number of certifications
Guru Nanak College, Chennai, (GNC) has been honoured as one of the leading colleges in India in terms of achieving the highest number of Nasscom certifications.
The college was awarded at the recent Nasscom Annual Technology Conference 2023, held in Delhi, where senior officials of the college received the IT-ITeS SSC award.
The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) is the lobby group for the Indian Information Technology industry. Its IT-ITeS Sector Skills Council Nasscom (SSC Nasscom) is a national standard-setting body for technology skills across the nation.
Nasscom award recognised the Tamil Nadu-based college for achieving one of the highest number of Nasscom certifications and building India as a ‘digital talent nation’ with their Information Technology (IT) skilling programmes.
“A big team of our professors spent their Sundays teaching the students, sitting, handholding, conducting mock tests for them. They even constructed a question bank because they had gone through the (IT) course themselves and took it as a challenge for the students to get as many gold medals as possible. See we as a college, 92 pc of our students are from the backward classes, so it’s very gratifying today that our efforts have been recognised. It is the pride of acknowledgement and happiness for all those who have achieved this to take the society to higher limits. It is not just one story but about bringing up generations. We have first generation’s learners too. So, hats off to the entire team,” Marlene Morais, Advisor of GNC, who had also served as the first woman principal of the institution, said in her acceptance speech.
“We are very happy to receive the Nasscom awards for performing the highest certification in the Nasscom. This certification not only helps the students for getting an entry into the IT industry but also helps them to sustain their job in the industry, thereby boosting their confidence level to work in the industry. With Nasscom Future Skills Prime, we have planned to focus on the areas of cyber security, machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc, which is the need of the hour,” says R Anand, Dean Skill Development and Placements.
Nasscom Annual Technology Conference 2023 delved into the theme of ‘Intelligent Technologies – Powering the Future’ to explore the evolving landscape of intelligent technologies and their impact on businesses, industries, and society.
“Guru Nanak Centre for Skill Development, Guru Nanak College has trained the students to receive Nasscom certifications. The courses are self-paced and our entire vibrant team has extended our handholding for facilitating the students to understand the modules and the contents. We prepared them for mock exams and made them ready to appear for proctored exams as well. These strategies equipped students to get certifications with medals. I am very happy that our college has received the award for highest number of Nasscom certifications and building India as digital talent nation with future skills prime under Miety-Nasscom digital skilling initiatives,” says M Kavitha, Deputy Dean, Guru Nanak Centre for Skill Development and Placement.
“We at Guru Nanak College offer value-added courses to our students. So along with their degrees, every semester they take up two certifications and they are also given additional credits for it. This helps the student to update his knowledge and also make them placement ready,” adds Morais.
Apart from upskilling both the management and students, GNC also encourages them to undertake innovative projects. The college regularly arranges industrial visits, workshops, training programmes to symposiums and professional development programmes for students to hone their raw skills as a part of their course.
Founded in 1971, Guru Nanak College offers 26 UG courses, 09 PG courses, 08 doctoral programmes along with 82 value-added courses. With a student teacher ratio of 24, the college also helps in placements for the students, hosting over 150 companies each year for placements.
