Civil rights group Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has released a report featuring the 10 richest candidates from various political parties who will be contesting in phase three.

As many as 29 pc of the 1,352 candidates in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections are millionaires, says a report by apolitical NGO Association of Democratic Rights. In the report, ADR has listed details of the wealth of the candidates as well as providing details of those candidates against whom there are criminal cases pending.

Here are the 10 richest candidates in the fray for the May 7 voting.

Pallavi Shrinivas Dempo

Net Worth: INR 13.61 billion

Party: BJP

Pallavi Shrinivas Dempo, Executive Director of Dempo Industries, one of the largest business houses in Goa, is the richest candidate in the fray in phase 3.

The BJP candidate from South Goa constituency, with a declared wealth of INR 13.61 billion, is also the party’s first woman candidate in Goa.

Her assets include around INR12.5 billion in movable assets and roughly INR 1.11 billion in immovable assets.

Dempo holds a graduate degree in chemistry and a postgraduate degree in business management (MBA) from MIT, Pune. She oversees the media and real estate arm of Dempo Industries as its executive director and is the richest candidate to have ever contested any polls in Goa and the wealthiest among those in the fray in the third phase of polling on May 7 across the country.

The South Goa seat is considered a Congress bastion. The grand old party has won the seat 10 times while the BJP has bagged it twice in 1999 and 2014.

Party: BJP

With assets worth over INR 4.24 billion, a BJP candidate from Guna in Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia is the second richest candidate contesting in the Lok Sabha elections Phase three.

Currently civil aviation minister, Scindia hails comes from the former royal family of Gwalior. Jivajirao Scindia, his grandfather, was the last maharaja of the princely state of Gwalior. He has a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Stanford. His entry into politics was sudden, when his father, Madhavrao Scindia, a former minister in Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet, died in a plane crash in 2001.

He contested his first Lok Sabha election in 2002 from Guna and went on to win as a candidate of the Congress party. He remained a Congress MP until losing his seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

In 2020, Scindia severed ties with the Congress, pulling the plug on the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh. He then switched to the BJP and was elected to the Rajya Sabha. In 2021, he was handed charge of the Civil Aviation Ministry.

Shahu Shahaji Chhatrapati

Shahu Shahaji Chhatrapati is said to be the 12th descendent of the 17th century Maratha ruler Shivaji. He is a Congress candidate from Lok Sabha election from Kolhapur in Maharashtra.

Party: Congress

With total family assets worth INR 2.41 billion, Dr Prabha Mallikarjun is the Congress candidate from Davangere in Karnataka and one of the richest candidates who has filed the nomination papers in phase 3.

Udayanraje Bhonsle is contesting from Satara constituency in Maharashtra. He owns movable assets worth INR 2.23 billion and immovable assets worth INR 72 million.

The former parliamentarian, who was earlier in NCP, declared liabilities of INR18 million as loans. Bhonsle has declared movable assets worth INR162 million. He is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha.

He belongs to the Samajwadi Party and is formally a member of the Indian National Congress. He was a member of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India from the Bareilly Lok Sabha constituency between 2009 and 2014. He had also served as MLA twice from Bareilly between 1989 and 1991 and 1993 and 1995. He has also served as minister of state in the government of Uttar Pradesh.
